A sacred place worth the journey.
The modern Franciscan church stands beside the rock-cut tomb long venerated as the tomb from which Jesus called Lazarus in John 11. Pilgrims identified a Bethany tomb by the early fourth century and successive churches rose nearby; the present entrance and fabric reflect later changes, so continuity of veneration is stronger than claims that every visible element is first-century.
