Editor's note: I'm happy to share a guest article from our friend Denise Bossert, who is currently on a Catholic media trip to the beautiful country of Jordan. Please keep Denise and her fellow travelers in your prayers. Lisa I slept great on the plane. Who wouldn’t? I had three seats to myself, and I was trying a new thing this time. One Ambien tablet. It worked for a few of the pilgrims on my first trip to the Holy Land. And, it worked for me. But… I woke up before the pill … [Read More...]

Holiday Inn Resort Lake Buena Vista: Orlando, FL
September 25, 2014 By Jen Steed
Recently, we took a family vacation to Florida. Usually, we spend the whole trip on Disney property. This time around, though, we stayed in 3 different resorts due to being in town for a conference. Of the three places we stayed on this trip, the Holiday Inn Resort Lake Buena Vista was our favorite. I could easily see this being our destination hotel of choice on a future trip. Not only is it a Disney Good Neighbor hotel with free transportation to Disney, but it’s one of the MouseSavers … [Read More...]

Thorns on the Mount of Beatitudes
February 3, 2015 By Guest Tourist
Terry was sitting beside her husband at the outdoor Mass we attended on the Mount of Beatitudes. She leaned into Chris’ side and felt the joy of praying the Mass with him, the enormity of hearing the words of the divine liturgy on this mountain where Jesus Christ proclaimed the Sermon on the Mount. Then, Terry suddenly reached up and swiped at the back of her neck as though she had been stung. It was no bee. When I looked behind her, I had to smile. The branch she had just swept away was … [Read More...]

9 easy and creative ways to save for a pilgrimage
March 21, 2015 By Lisa M. Hendey
Over at Patheos Catholic, my friend and fellow blogger Marge Fenelon has an excellent resource to help you plan and save for making a pilgrimage a reality: 9 easy and creative ways to save for a pilgrimage Pilgrimages are easier to save for than you think – so easy that even you can do it! It doesn’t take independent wealth or a huge inheritance. Rather, it takes these five things: 1) A real desire to go and trust in God to open the door for you to go. 2) Determined … [Read More...]

Help Make “The Faithful Traveler: Exploring the California Missions” A Reality
February 2, 2015 By Lisa M. Hendey
I'm a major fan of the work of Diana and David von Glahn and The Faithful Traveler. As such, I'm anxious to see Diana's next project come to fruition: THE FAITHFUL TRAVELER: EXPLORING THE CALIFORNIA MISSIONS will be a 10-13 episode travel television series, produced in both English and Spanish, that will explore and tell the history behind all 21 of California's historic missions in high definition. Starting in San Diego and traveling up the coast all the way to Sonoma, near San Francisco, the … [Read More...]

Tanzania Journal: From Rice Bowls to Soybean Fields
January 22, 2015 By Lisa M. Hendey
By this time tomorrow, I will have begun the first leg of my adventure to Tanzania. My first flight, to Seattle, leaves early tomorrow morning. I'm overcompensating on my departure from home to try to beat Fresno's famous fog. God willing, I'll have a bit of time to goof off in the Emerald City before my international flights on Saturday. That means that today is packing day. It's also laundry day, housekeeping day, market day, and the day to get life generally organized before I leave town … [Read More...]

Tanzania Journal: Catholic Life in Tanzania with Pauline Sr. Caroline
January 20, 2015 By Lisa M. Hendey
On my "to do" list today are things like "learn how to say 'please' in Kiswahili" and "buy heavy duty bug spray". Yes, our Tanzania mission with Catholic Relief Services is only days away! To help with my preparations, I reached out to Sr. Caroline Njeru a Daughter of St. Paul currently serving the Church in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. I was very moved by her responses on the vibrancy of the Catholic Church in Africa. Please join me today in offering a prayer of thanksgiving for Sr. Caroline and … [Read More...]

Tanzania Journal #1: #CRSMedia Mission to Tanzania
December 19, 2014 By Lisa M. Hendey
Friends who follow me on Facebook saw a status update a few days ago that intrigued them. I posted a very unflattering photo of myself decidedly not smiling. That's unusual for me: In reality, it was truly hard to contain my smile in that photo. The purpose for an updated passport pic is my big news. I needed a visa photo for an upcoming January trip with Catholic Relief Services to the country of Tanzania! For the record, no smiling is allowed in passport photos. But in real life, I … [Read More...]

The God Quest: Traveling to Bethlehem this Advent
December 16, 2014 By Guest Tourist
One of my favorite Bible stories comes from the book of Ruth. It is the prototype for all faith travel. It captures the mysterious dynamic of the life-changing pilgrimage experience. When one stands in Bethlehem and looks out over Shepherds’ Field, the stories rise to the surface and people of faith cannot help but stand in awe, remembering. Standing there, you remember the angels who sang to shepherds in that field, announcing the Messiah’s arrival, but you also remember the things of … [Read More...]
