Why pilgrims come

A sacred place worth the journey.

Cuba’s national Marian sanctuary preserves the venerated image of Our Lady of Charity, proclaimed Patroness of Cuba by Pope Benedict XV in 1916 and crowned by St. John Paul II in 1998. The traditional account of the image’s discovery in the Bay of Nipe belongs to devotional history; inclusion rests on the documented national cult, papal recognition, and continuing pilgrimage.
