Why pilgrims come

A sacred place worth the journey.

Uruguay’s bishops erected the hill sanctuary at Verdún as a national shrine in 2010 after more than a century of pilgrimage. Pope Leo XIII granted an indulgence connected with visiting the image in 1902. The annual April 19 ascent joins Marian prayer with Uruguay’s civic memory.
