Stella Maris is the mother house and spiritual center of the Discalced Carmelites on Mount Carmel. Its nineteenth-century minor basilica stands over earlier Christian remains and encloses beneath the high altar a grotto traditionally associated with the prophet Elijah. The sanctuary joins the biblical memory of Carmel to devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the origins of the Carmelite family.
Come to the Carmelite mother house to pray where the Order locates its spiritual roots. Read 1 Kings 18–19, visit the basilica and the grotto beneath its altar, and contemplate Mary as Our Lady of Mount Carmel—patroness, mother, and sister of the Carmelite family.
