The Rosary is not a way around Christ. It is a way of slowing down long enough to contemplate his life—his Incarnation, ministry, Passion, Resurrection, and glory—with the woman who knew him most intimately.

St. John Paul II described the Rosary as a Gospel prayer that places Christians at the “school of Mary” to contemplate the face of Christ. Its repeated prayers create a steady rhythm; the mystery—not repetition for its own sake—is the center.
Personal sorrow, gratitude, families, the Church, and the needs of the world can be carried through every decade.
The beads give the body a simple path when attention is scattered or someone does not know what else to say.
The Church repeatedly commends the Rosary as prayer for peace that must also form the person praying into a peacemaker.
The Rosary is not a charm, a guarantee of control, or a substitute for the Mass and sacraments. Its spiritual power is the grace of God working through faithful, Christ-centered prayer.

A simple beginning
How to pray one Rosary
You do not need perfect concentration or advanced knowledge. Bring one sincere intention, proceed slowly, and let the Gospel mystery carry the prayer.

Begin
Make the Sign of the Cross, pray the Apostles’ Creed, then an Our Father, three Hail Marys, and a Glory Be.

Enter the mystery
Name the first mystery. Pause long enough to picture the Gospel event and place an intention before God.

Pray one decade
Pray one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and the Glory Be while returning your attention to Christ in the mystery. The Fatima prayer may follow.

Continue
Repeat the same pattern for the remaining four mysteries. Distraction is not failure; gently begin contemplating again.

Conclude
After five decades, pray the Hail Holy Queen and the customary concluding prayer, then make the Sign of the Cross.

The Shrine of Fatima summarizes the repeated request given to the shepherd children: pray the Rosary every day and offer that prayer for peace in the world. The Rosary still marks the sanctuary’s daily rhythm.

Bernadette prayed the Rosary during the apparitions at Massabielle. Today the sanctuary’s Rosary Basilica, meditated Rosary at the Grotto, and candlelight procession continue that living prayer.
