The story
Bernadette Soubirous was a young woman from a poor Lourdes family who reported a series of Marian apparitions at Massabielle in 1858. Church investigation and the later growth of the sanctuary transformed Lourdes into one of the world’s major pilgrimage destinations.
Her story is larger than the grotto alone. Boly Mill and Le Cachot preserve the family setting; the parish church preserves her baptismal memory; Nevers preserves the convent where she lived as a religious sister and the chapel where her body is venerated.
How to read this pilgrimage
