The story
Junípero Serra was a Spanish Franciscan missionary associated with the early California mission system. He founded missions, traveled extensively, preached, and died at Carmel, where his principal tomb is preserved.
These sites also belong to a colonial system that profoundly affected Indigenous peoples. A responsible visit should attend to Native testimony, coercion, disease, labor, cultural loss, and survival alongside the devotional history presented by the missions.
How to read this pilgrimage
Carmel holds the tomb; San Diego and San Juan Capistrano preserve foundation and liturgical associations. Historical interpretation should include both Catholic and Indigenous perspectives.
St. Junípero Serra, pray for us.
