Catholic Western United States,
many landscapes, living faith.

Follow sacred places from Chimayó and the Sonoran Desert to California’s mission corridor, the inland Northwest, Portland, Alaska, and Hawaiʻi—without flattening distinct peoples and histories into one frontier story.

Mission history requires more than one voice

Several destinations stand on Indigenous homelands and were built or sustained by Native communities. Their Catholic history includes faith, skill, persistence, coercion, displacement, and living descendants. Read tribal and Church sources together, ask before photographing people or ceremonies, and never treat a community as historical scenery.

Five regional chapters

Build journeys by landscape—not by map distance alone.

The West is too large for one itinerary. Use these clusters as separate pilgrimages, then verify liturgy, seasonal roads, wildfire conditions, construction, and community protocols.

Plan prayerfully

Let distance slow the pilgrimage down.

Do not turn this collection into a checklist. Choose one region, verify every official source, learn whose homeland you are entering, and leave room for liturgy, local Catholic life, and silence.
