What makes this visit meaningful
The Basilica of St. Francis is both a masterpiece of Christian art and the saint’s burial place. A good pilgrimage descends deliberately from the Upper Basilica through the Lower Basilica to the crypt, allowing the story told by the frescoes to lead toward prayer at the tomb.
Crypt and tomb of St. Francis
Descend beneath the Lower Basilica to pray at the saint’s stone tomb.
Lower Basilica
Follow the chapels and frescoes toward the crypt in a more intimate, prayerful space.
Upper Basilica
Read the visual life of St. Francis in the celebrated fresco cycle while respecting the basilica as a church.
Continue through Assisi
Link the visit with St. Clare, St. Carlo Acutis, San Damiano and the Portiuncula.
