The story

Francis of Assisi moved from the ambitions of a merchant’s son toward a life of poverty, penance, fraternity, and service to the poor. His witness gave rise to the Franciscan family and a spiritual tradition marked by the Gospel, peace, humility, and care for creation.

Assisi remains the essential center because it preserves his tomb and the landscape of his life. Shrines elsewhere show how Franciscan devotion traveled across cultures; they are devotional descendants, not substitutes for the historical places in Umbria.

How to read this pilgrimage

Begin with the tomb and places of Francis’s life in Assisi, then treat international shrines as evidence of the worldwide Franciscan tradition and local popular devotion.
