Biography
The canonical Gospels do not name the parents of the Virgin Mary. The names Anne and Joachim come from early Christian writings outside the biblical canon, especially the Protoevangelium of James, and were received into a rich tradition of prayer, preaching, and sacred art. That distinction matters: devotion is ancient, but the surviving narrative is not an eyewitness Gospel biography.
Christians came to honor Anne as the mother who prepared Mary for her vocation and, through Mary, as the grandmother of Jesus. Her name has been associated with grace, family life, grandparents, motherhood, and patient trust. Churches in East and West celebrate Anne and Joachim together, while local calendars and customs give the devotion different emphases.
The mapped destinations are therefore devotional centers rather than a fully authenticated travel itinerary from Anne’s lifetime. Some preserve old local claims, others are major pilgrimage shrines built around later apparitions or favors attributed to her intercession, and still others express the devotion of a particular region or immigrant community.

Read each destination according to the claim it actually makes. A church dedicated to Anne, a later apparition shrine, and a traditional birthplace are spiritually connected but historically different categories.
