Biography
Wiborada lived as a consecrated recluse in a cell beside St. Mangen in St. Gallen. Though enclosed, she was not cut off from the Church or city: townspeople, monks, abbots, and rulers sought her counsel through a window open to the world and another open toward the church.
The Diocese of St. Gallen records that she foresaw the Hungarian invasion of 926. Her warning allowed residents, monks, and precious manuscripts to be moved to safety. Wiborada remained faithful to her enclosed vocation and was killed on May 2.
Pope Clement II canonized Wiborada in 1047. The Diocese identifies her as the first woman formally canonized by a pope and honors her as patroness of libraries and book lovers. The Abbey profession book preserves a contemporary entry recording her martyrdom.
