Why pilgrims come
A sacred place worth the journey.
A continuously visited Marian sanctuary whose documented pilgrimage history reaches back to the late sixteenth century. The Diocese of Mayagüez calls it a major pilgrimage center and records St. John Paul II’s elevation of the sanctuary to a minor basilica in 1998. Stories of Giraldo González, his daughter, and favors attributed to Our Lady of Monserrate are presented as local pious tradition—not as a formally approved Marian apparition.
