Catholic Albania & the Southern Balkans
where faith survived prohibition, crossed borders, and still gathers pilgrims.

Follow Albania’s national Marian road, the places that shaped St. Teresa of Calcutta, North Macedonia’s Latin and Byzantine Catholic communities, and the relic-rich Catholic churches of the Bay of Kotor.

One region does not mean one Church or one historical claim

The collection distinguishes active Latin Catholic and Macedonian Greek Catholic churches from a state memorial museum and an archaeological site. Letnica is a Catholic Marian sanctuary connected with Mother Teresa’s vocation; the Skopje memorial stands on the site of her former baptismal church but is not her birthplace house or tomb. Stobi is early-Christian archaeology, not a functioning Catholic shrine.

Five chapters through the southern Balkans

Begin with pilgrimage, then follow martyrs, vocation, rites, and relics.

This first wave favors places with a clear sacred relationship and a real visitor experience. It does not turn every old church into a Catholic destination or blur modern borders, rites, custodianship, and levels of certainty.

Plan prayerfully

The southern Balkans reward precise labels.

The region’s Catholic story includes Latin and Byzantine worship, Communist-era martyrdom, shared public devotion, museum interpretation, and early-Christian archaeology. The distinctions are part of the pilgrimage: they show what is worshipped today, what is remembered, and what remains beneath the ground.
