Catholic history, varied custodianship

Many of the North's great medieval Catholic shrines became Lutheran parish churches or civic heritage sites after the Reformation. Each guide identifies the present custodian, distinguishes Catholic Mass from another community's worship, and separates an extant relic or tomb from a traditional, lost, moved, or reconstructed sacred place.

The Nordic pilgrimage revival crosses confessional lines, but the differences matter. Name the Catholic origin, the Reformation rupture, the current Catholic minority, and the Lutheran or civic custodian honestly. A medieval shrine, an active Catholic cathedral, a saint's visible relics, and an archaeological ruin invite different forms of attention.
