Scripture repeatedly leads people onto mountains: Moses receives the covenant, Elijah confronts divided worship, Christ is transfigured, teaches, prays, suffers, and ascends. This collection follows those biblical heights and the monasteries, shrines, hermitages, and penitential paths where later Christians made ascent a form of prayer.

A holy mountain is still a mountain

Several places in this collection involve exposed paths, severe heat or cold, rapid weather changes, altitude, unstable footing, or restricted access. Others are shared Christian heritage under Orthodox or Eastern Catholic custody. Read each destination’s current safety and custodianship notes, dress for the terrain, and never treat a devotional tradition as permission to ignore local authorities.

The point is not to collect summits. Scripture’s mountains are places of encounter, testing, revelation, surrender, and mission. Let the physical ascent strip away hurry; let the view widen prayer; and let the descent carry what was received back into ordinary life.
